worked in his father's business at Knightsbridge as a carpenter and builder.

- in 1810 became a Royal Marine and saw action in several battles
- in 1817 he travelled to Australia as one of the ship's company on Dick
captained by Phillip Parker King. King was sent to Australia to chart the
coastline, completing the work done by Flinders and Cook. Clarke served as a
steward on The Mermaid which was used for most of the survey work. (They Came
as Strangers, Loftus Dun, 1997)
- in 1818 Clarke left The Mermaid and went to Parramatta and then arrived in
the Paterson area about 1821. When Rev George Middleton selected land for a
Glebe at Patersons Plains in 1821 Clarke built and lived in a hut on the
northern section (now part of Tocal)
- in 1822 Clarke built the house for Tocal's first settler, James Phillips
Webber
- from 1826 to 1830 Clarke was Chief Constable of Patersons Plains
- 1826/27 he was a tenant farmer at Tocal. Wentworth Family Papers - lists

of the first Maitland Show
- legend has it that his horse, Free Trader, was stolen from Tocal by
Thunderbolt (Fred Ward) the bushranger in the 1860s

a horse breaker and groom. In 1856 he was sentenced to 10 years hard labour
for receiving horses stolen from Tocal. He was released in June 1860 on a
ticket of leave but imprisoned again in 1861. He escaped in 1863 and began
his exploits as the notorious bushranger Captain Thunderbolt (Brouwer, 2007)
- oral tradition says that in the 1860s he stole the imported horse Free
Trader from Tocal

- he sold Tocal in August 1834 and left the colony in 1835. In about 1855 he
built a magnificent mansion (villa Webber) on the island of La Maddalena,
Sardinia, Italy, which stills stand today. Mussolini was imprisoned there in
1943
- he died in Pisa, Italy in 1877 (Walsh, 2008)

- Mary Ann was the daughter of Ann Kidd (nee Maguire) and Philip Whalen.
Mary Ann was at Tocal with her husband Thomas until about 1858 (Brouwer,

emigrant. He was employed on arrival by Charles Reynolds at Tocal with 2
others from the Elizabeth as a ploughman and labourer under a memorandum of
agreement for 17 pounds per annum and a weekly ration of 10lbs beef or
mutton, 10lbs flour, 2lbs sugar and a quarter lb of tea. SR, Assisted
